How Floral Styling Shapes a Wedding’s Atmosphere
Colour, scent, scale and season: how flowers set the mood of each function, and how to plan floral styling that lasts through a long celebration.

Flowers are often the first thing guests notice and the last thing they forget. They bring colour, scent and life to a space in a way that no other material can, and in an Indian wedding they also carry meaning, from the marigold garlands of a haldi to the flowers of the varmala.
Here is how we think about florals when designing a celebration.
Colour sets the mood
The palette of a function is often decided by its flowers. Bright marigolds and yellow blooms feel joyful and festive; whites and greens feel calm and elegant; deep reds and burgundies feel rich and romantic. Choosing a different floral palette for each function is one of the simplest ways to give every event its own character.

Scale changes everything
A centrepiece on each table creates intimacy. A floral ceiling or an installation over the stage creates drama. Most celebrations need both: large gestures that frame the space and small arrangements that guests see up close. Deciding where to put the larger investment, usually the focal point of each function, keeps the design coherent.
Don’t forget scent
Fragrance is part of the experience. Jasmine, tuberose and roses are lovely at an entrance or along a pathway, but strongly scented flowers can overwhelm a dining table. Think about where guests will linger and where they will eat, and choose accordingly.

Plan for the season and the heat
Flower availability and quality change through the year, and some varieties travel better than others. In warm weather, or for outdoor daytime functions, choose hardy flowers and plan when arrangements are made and installed, so they look as fresh in the evening as they did in the morning. A good florist will suggest alternatives if a particular bloom is out of season or unlikely to last.
Let flowers and light work together
Flowers look completely different under candlelight than in daylight. For evening functions, plan floral and lighting design together: soft light from below or within an arrangement can make it glow, while harsh overhead light flattens it.
Ask the venue early
Some venues have rules about installations that attach to ceilings or heritage surfaces, or about flowers near food. Confirm these early so the floral design is planned around them.
